L’Oreal Infallible Matte Max Lip Colours – Review and First Impressions

It’s no secret that I love wearing a killer matte lipstick, I love the anti-shine formulas and the fact that they normally last really well throughout the day, so when I saw the L’Oreal Infallible Matte Max Lip Colours, I was intrigued.

For testing purposes only (yeah, right), I bought a nude shade and a bold shade so I could see if the formulas and wear times differed between them. The product itself is a powder type format which is applied using the little pointed sponge; quite different for a lip product. Although there can’t be that much actual lip colour in these (as the product is only in the lid), but when I swatched them on my hand the consistency was silky smooth and gave a completely matte finish – there was no shine to be seen!

I saw a lot of promo around these and I think one of their selling points is to be able to blend the colours together, much like you would do with your eyeshadow, creating a cool ombré look. This may be a little high maintenance for everyday use but, if you’re experimenting with new looks it could be right up your street.

First impressions

I couldn’t wait to get them out of the packaging and started with the shade 001 Silencio, a peachy nude that I felt I could wear every day. When I applied it to my bare lips the sponge initially felt scratchy, nothing like the soft silky feeling I had when I tried it on my hand. Once I had the product on it did feel a little chalky and seemed to settle between the lines in my lips, not a great look if you want a full looking pout.

However, after a bit of a false start, I removed the lip colour and tried it again over a thin layer of lip balm. This worked like a dream and just gave it the base it needed; the powdery formula was much silkier after a bit of balm. It applied smoothly and shape of the sponge applicator was really easy and precise to use. The second colour was 004 Oops I Pink it Again, a rich berry pinky-red and this was the one I decided to test in the wild.

The Test Run

After application, I didn’t feel there was anything on my lips because the fine powder texture was super light. There was no stickiness at all and the lines I created using the Oops I Pink it Again colour was sharp and neat looking.

I would say the wear time was average. It lasted longer than a lip gloss or satin finish lipstick but it wasn’t even close to the long-wear of a matte liquid lipstick, but then again, it doesn’t claim to be. After a couple of hours and a coffee or two the inners of my lips were definitely fading. It wasn’t too bad though because the fade was a little more even, not just bare in the middle and a neat line around the edges.

Topping up through the day wasn’t an issue either, I just dabbed on the tiniest bit of balm then layered over some more of the powder and the finish was pretty flawless.

The Verdict

I really loved he finish that these gave, they’re almost brightening in a way and don’t feel heavy on the lips. I loved both colours I picked up but I think the formulas of these suit the nude tones a little more as they’re less obvious when they start to fade. There’s not too many colours in the range yet but definitely go and have a swatch if you’re in the market for another matte lip – we always need another lip product, right?!

Have you tried any unusual lip products? I’d love to hear what you have found that’s a little different from the norm.

I haven’t seen these up close before, I don’t know if they even sell them in Australia, probably not so I’ll have to wait until my upcoming trip overseas to have a look at them. I seem to be creating quite a long list 🙂
